Lunar Beauty

Just as the full moon
outshines the other stars,
so you outshine
all other beautiful women!

O divine moon,
shine on me!
For just as you, a Goddess,
come down to earth
to meet Endymion,
a humble shepherd,
so do I, a mortal,
rise towards the heavens,
to meet my beloved
a goddess of beauty!

No, to walk my path
in life,
I don’t steer by the Great Bear
or the Corona Borealis:
It’s you, my love, who guides me
on the paths of my life!

For I trust you more
than Callisto,
who was transformed into the Great Bear
or Ariadne
who became the Corona Borealis!

Such is my happiness with you,
that it is more difficult to count
the sensual delights we have shared
than to calculate the number
of fish in all the world’s oceans,
the grains of sand in the Sahara,
all the trees on earth
or all the coral islands in the Pacific!

And you shine more kindly
on me
than the warm sun shines
on the earth!

And even if I barely knew you,
to find your equal,
I would need to
go to the ends of the earth,
To the Amazon, to Polynesia
To Micronesia!
